As a further sign of spring here in the Bay Area, this is what I did on Saturday. I call this my black gold. It's 90% kitchen scraps. In fact you can still see a few eggshells. I mixed it with some steer manure and spread it on my vegie beds. Planted some herbs, lettuce and leeks thus far. Still too early for tomatoes as they are only several inches tall and basking in the sun upstairs in their little pots. When I've cleaned out all the vegie beds and planted more, I'll post a few more photos.

Looks like good stuff. I'd go for the chicken manure in the future.

Saw a nifty way to construct a compost box on DIY. Next project.

Are the Crepe Myrtles in the ground?

My leeks are up, along with garlic, basil, arugula, tomatoes and peppers in the ground. The heirloom tomatoes arrived on Friday.

Ah, you folks with your moderate climates! Its been soo cold up here that I haven't even cleaned the leaves off my bulb beds yet. Crocuses are in bloom and daffies are sending up lots of leaves. I have tomatoes, peppers and kohlrabi starts sitting in their peat pots - I have to see if Cherie will come in and water them while we are visiting Laura & family in Vegas.
That looks like some good compost alright.
Leeks and garlic, David. Those take a long long season to do. I love both but wouldn't even try that in my garden. I'll stick with the arugula tho' - its easy to grow. Jan
