Fledgling

It's time for our owl fledglings to emerge and learn to fly. David saw the first one clinging to the trees last night. But this one didn't emerge until this afternoon while we were at the airport. I discovered him clinging to a tiny branch late this afternoon. I brought in the house animals because I feared he would fall.

Later, I went to see if he had righted himself. I couldn't find him anywhere when I finally looked down at the ground. And there he was.

After bringing in the house cats and dogs again, the fledgling decided to get off the ground. We looked later to see him on the stair banister.

A few minutes later, he walked across the porch floor, hopped on the love-seat and then onto the porch rail. He's there contemplating a leap to the nearest tree.

With darkness, we hope he'll make it back to the safety of a tree.

This is just like an episode of "Animal Planet" I can attest to the owl family unit doing their yearly thing in the front yard.

Also from the porch in my recent trip to Iowa, I saw a coyote run through Alan's field to the east of the house much to the anger of Canadian Geese camping in the same field. Unabashed, the coyote ran right through the middle of their troupe and headed north.

There were big deer everywhere, I mean big deer. I saw a bald eagle during a drive to Red Oak and a skunk one day while working on the fence. Luckily he scurried about undetected by the dogs.

Last weekend I met up with a skunk crossing the road - - - - very, very slowly. I checked my rear view mirror and when I saw no one behind me I put on the brakes. Really didn't want to hit that skunk!

Love the owl photos and also the documentary of the fencing project. Good job, guys! Jan
