Cherie's send-off for Uncle Bud

I guess I made the final check-in with Uncle Bud this morning. I called first to see if I could run in for a minute before going to Hertzel's studio. I caught them at about 9:30 a.m.

Bud was about ready to go; Dolores was taking her time. I think Bud was looking forward to the trip. He's still apprehensive about Jerry Dietz sticking the microphone in his face. I assured him Jerry would leave him alone if he told Jerry he would not talk on air. Otherwise, I think he was looking forward to the trip.

Being sentimental, I took him my pair of Dad's wings. I asked him to take them with him. We all agreed Dad would have loved this. I know there'll be a lot of other vets traveling in spirit with the 4 from Montgomery County. I remember Dad reminiscing about coming home to all the missing faces. And of course, we know he saved the article about Montgomery County sacrificing more soldiers than anywhere else in the country.

Bud chuckled to me, too, about the Congressional delegation. But I think he'll be surprised. I think the vets will be the big shots, not the legislators. I'm not sure he understands that.

I'll be anxious to see his photos and hear his story when he gets back. And Jan and I will get the photo of the Emerson memorial up as soon as we make the trip.

Nice idea taking Dad's wings.

I also think you may be right about the Vets being the stars of this show.

Is anyone documenting this with video?

Good question! I'd bet some of the vets will take cameras, but I don't know if anyone official is.

If this charity that organizes the trips is smart, they'll be documenting every trip. We need to get the name of the organization and check with them. I saw something about them around Memorial Day but can't remember.

Let me poke around a bit.

That was a great idea, Cherie, having Uncle Bud take Dad' wings along with him. Bravo to you for thinking of it. Jan
