Marin Century 100K

I survived, but I am a tired puppy.

It was a wonderful day, with highs in the 70's and only moderate breezes.  I rode alone, so saw lots of people stream by me all day.  (The 100k route was the 2nd shortest of those on offer - they also had two centuries, and two double centuries, each coming in "Traditional" or "Mt. Tam" flavors.  In other words, lots of climbing, or even more climbing!)

The route was slightly short - 57.1 miles, and I averaged 11 mph on the road, just under 10 mph counting rest stops.  I was hoping that the first climb of the day, Big Rock Hill on Lucas Valley, would be the worst, but Wilson Hill, around the two thirds mark, was the most challenging.  Surprised I made it up.  220 lbs, times 34x28, equals a lot of time in the pain zone.

Other than that, the day went smoothly, no mechaicals, no physical problems except for cramping in the upper legs after the final rest stop (I rode thru it.).

Here's the map - maybe some pictures from the event later.     -Tom-

Congradulations on the ride. That's a metabolism mega boost. You could probably absorb a 32 oz. porterhouse afterward. Was 10-11 mph pace do to the elevations changes or to the distance. Did you eat glu and other mega ride food?

Peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat, and bagels and cream cheese at the rest stops. At 220 lbs I have a lot of reserves before I bonk.

I do about 12.5 mph on an 1.5 hour ride, so not that far off my natural pace.

Pretty good feed afterwards. Highlights were the Strauss NuScoop Coffee frozen yogurt and Fiorello's Artisan Gelato Old Kentucky Bourbon Butter Pecan.

You can buy Fiorello's Gelato at Central Market, 4821 Broadway St in San Antonio.

That's about my pace on my Lakehills 20 miler. Back in April I was in better shape on a couple of the SA rides I was running right at 15-16 mph on 22-25 miles. Terrain was a little flatter however. D

Fiorello's is highly recommended?
